Ergometer

Ergometer bicycles are one of the most favorite pieces of workout equipment and should not be forgotten about when considering a home gym. An Ergometer works just like a regular bike and has a very simple range of motion. Its compact size makes the Ergometer a perfect endurance machine for your gym at home.

What is an Ergometer?

An Ergometer has countless benefits, the biggest being its accessibility. It is easy for everyone to use, regardless of age, fitness level, or intentions. Just put your feet in the pedals and you are ready to start an effective cardiovascular workout with the Ergometer.
Whether you use it for warmup or to reach your set endurance targets, with the Ergometer your training will be very goal-oriented. This is due to the most important setting which distinguishes the Ergometer from a regular stationary bike: the Watt Feature. This is an infallible measurement for fitness level.

The watt count keeps track of the amount of work performed. With the Ergometer you can measure your performance exactly and assess how efficient your workouts are. You can also pre-select your desired performance level and do a specific workout based on this with an appropriate training program. Using this approach, you can reach your specific fitness goals faster and easier.

Ergometer watt function

Who should use an Ergometer?

The Ergometer is very easy to operate. The range of motion is similar to a typical bicycle. Absolute beginners can ease into their training and advanced users will find enjoyment.

The resistance can be set very precisely using the watt feature. Setting parameters like time, distance, calories burned, and heart rate are all basic functions of the Ergometer. Set your personal workout goal and track your achievements. With regular activity, you will quickly notice progress.

Endurance workouts with the Ergometer are some of the most low-impact. The seat supports 70-80% of body weight, putting considerably less stress on the knee joints than jogging. The seat also allows older users to keep active in a comfortable way. We highly recommend the Cardio Strider in conjunction.

The Ergometer is also a great choice for those who simply enjoy biking. Whether you’re interested in improving basic stamina, losing weight, or boosting personal performance, the Ergometer can help you achieve whatever you desire.

Why train with an Ergometer?

The most important part of any sport is reaching your goals. Maybe you would like to fit into your favorite jeans again, or be able to ride your bike along the lake; it doesn’t matter what your vision is, you will achieve your goals with regular use of the Ergometer.

With an Ergometer, you can target your stamina, and more importantly, your heart muscles. Besides the cardiovascular benefits, you can also train leg muscles, core, and shoulders. Thighs, glutes, and calf muscles are strengthened through biking. Core muscles in the stomach and back stabilize and absorb impact. Shoulder muscles are engaged by keeping the body propped up on the handlebars.

What to consider when purchasing an Ergometer?

There are certain criteria to keep in mind when choosing an ergometer. Oscillating weight, weight, and maximum weight capacity are all indicators of a high-quality ergometer. The first step is to identify your training goals and desires. What features are important to you? How often and how intensely would you like to work out?

After you’ve answered these questions, there are a few important criteria when buying an Ergometer:

  • The brake system
  • The independency of revolutions per minute
  • The oscillating weight li>
  • The weight of the machine (also weight capacity)
  • Workout programs and features

Brake systems of Ergometers can differ greatly, ranging from permanent magnets to induction brakes. With both systems, the resistance is regulated in watts. This is not controlled mechanically, but rather with electricity and tension. This allows for a quick and exact resistance adjustment. An induction break system is hands down the better choice and bears great importance for therapeutic and sustained use.

The concept of independent revolutions per minute relates specifically to Ergometers alone. For the user, regardless how fast or how hard one pedals, the same amount of energy output is used. This means that if you are pedalling slowly, the machine will recognize this and add resistance, thus increasing your energy output. When you pedal faster, the machine will reduce resistance to compensate. This is how your level of exertion remains at a constant, greatly benefitting the cardiovascular system without shock or irregularly.

The oscillating weight determines the fluidity of range of motion and concentricity. The Ergometer should also come equipped with ball bearings to ensure a flowing range of motion. We recommend an oscillating weight with at least 8 kg.

The machine weight is crucial for stability. This also defines the maximum weight capacity that the machine is capable of carrying.

Workout programs and features are the most important motivational factors for a piece of training equipment. Here there are many differences. You should think about what the computer should do for you. Do you need ready-made workouts? Do you need entertainment extras like an AUX cable for music?

Here are a few standard features of every ergometer:

  • Time
  • Distance
  • Calories burned
  • Heartrate
  • Watts
  • Speed

The most important function is the watt feature. Most machines, like the Exum, have pre-saved programs. Interval settings or incline capabilities challenge you to push your limits. Other models, like the FINNLO MAXIMUM S by HAMMER Ergometer B22, have built-in extras like a USB port. It’s up to you to decide how much technology is important.

There are different ways to measure heartrate on the Ergometer. You can monitor your heartrate through an ear clip or a chest strap. The chest strap is more exact and therefore recommended. During heartrate-focused workouts, you can set your desired heartrate zone, in order to stay within your limit.
